Nature Notes:
July 26-August 1
Lake surface temperatures reach their annual peak at 80 degrees or more. Joe-Pye weed and boneset are blooming brightly in wetlands. Baltimore orioles are attracted to feeders by grape jelly mixed with equal amounts of water. Early season apples such as Quinte and Lodi are now ripe. Native wild rice is in full bloom in the shallow waters of lakes and streams in central and northern Minnesota. The grains are ripe in early autumn.
