08/18/2010 - Our family recently ventured on a Laura Ingalls Wilder trip that took us from Hallock to De Smet, South Dakota and then across the southern part of Minnesota over to Pepin, Wisconsin. My youngest son, age 9, had read all of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books this past winter and was anxious to see some of the places written about in her books. Our week focused on history and natural resources. I have to admit that we were afraid that the trip might be a little too uneventful, but I’m happy to report that we all enjoyed ourselves and learned quite a bit in the process. Here are some of the sites we saw or places we visited that I’d recommend checking out.News Topic(s): What's New News! Kristin
07/28/2010 - Last week I read about 2 exercises, dubbed “shopping diets” that are currently taking place. In the first, called Six Items or Less – a global experiment examining the power of what we don’t wear, participants pledge to wear 6 items of clothing or less for one month (not including swimwear, underwear, outer jackets or coats, workout wear, shoes or accessories). The sister challenge, called The Great American Apparel Diet, is more strict. Participants pledge to forgo buying apparel for one year. That includes regular clothing items plus outerwear, athletic-wear and Halloween costumes. Underwear, shoes or accessories are exempt.News Topic(s): What's New News! Kristin
07/08/2010 - Trying to make environmentally conscious choices when it comes to home improvement can be a challenge. Conflicting information clutters the internet and the abundance of decisions that homeowners need to make is overwhelming enough without adding the environment into the mix. At least it is for me. In the past, fueled by a concern for the environment, we have installed concrete countertops and floor, cork flooring, a high efficiency boiler and water heater and low VOC paints but I always feel we should be doing more.News Topic(s): What's New Water Minnesota Stories Kristin
06/23/2010 - Rain, rain, go away. Come again some other day… like in a month or two. That is the mantra heard throughout Kittson County these days. It’s been a wet summer so far. Thankfully, spring came early and farmers were able to plant some of their crops long before they usually do. Unfortunately, it’s been raining ever since. Some days a slow drip falls, while other days a deluge pelts the already soaked land. Everyone is anxious, depressed and wondering “when will it end?” The situation is not good for the farmers and when the farmers aren’t happy no one is happy here. Next
