08/23/2010 - Diane Tran of Minnesota-based Grassroots Solutions says citizens should speak out during a comment period on a proposed federal policy to control human antibiotic resistance associated with food animal production.

Urgent action is needed to address antibiotic resistance. Individuals can improve resistance to infections through good hygiene and avoiding taking prescription antibiotics unnecessarily. However, the most critical step to ensure the availability and efficacy of antibiotic drugs is to create policies that drastically reduce their use where they are being applied most inappropriately and in the greatest numbers: in the production of our food supply.

08/10/2010 -

In a small backyard, my vegetable “garden” includes a tomato plant and a variety of herbs.  Getting the big bushy plant early in the spring from a trusted greenhouse up north, my Heartland tomato plant has already been producing ripe tomatoes faster than I can enjoy them.  After sharing the excess with a coworker for salsa, I realized that others are taking advantage of my diligent watering and care.  Unexpected others.

05/13/2010 - Every Friday night, I sit down and plan our meals for the coming week.  It’s a habit I learned from my mother, who as a single mom putting in 60 hours outside the home, hated to hear “What’s for dinner?” when she walked in the door.  This habit has become invaluable to my family for a number of reasons but perhaps the most important one is that it gives me a chance to make healthy choices and shop accordingly.

For years I’ve read that the vegetarian diet provides numerous benefits. Many dieticians recommend at least one night per week without meat.  I’ve never been able to make even that commitment for a variety of excuses.

04/07/2010 - There aren’t many shows these days that I care to carve time out of my day to watch.  But there is one new show, reality nonetheless, that I am completely hooked on.  Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution has been a real eye opening experience for my family and I.
