02/25/2010 - In 2002, I had the loon plate on my shiny red Tiburon.  I not only liked the way it looked on my car, but I felt reassured that the extra money was going to support critical habitats.  Seeing all these plates on the cars surrounding me last week begged the question, how is the money raised from the sale of these plates used?

01/22/2010 - There was some great news out of the DNR yesterday, Minnesota citizens added $8.8 million in value to the DNR through donated services in 2009.  In times when funding cuts are common, these volunteer services are important.  The DNR’s press release states that the citizen volunteers added the equivalent value of 209 full-time staffers.

Volunteering with the DNR or other related entity, is a great way to get outside, learn something new and give back.   The backpacking group I was a part of in college helped the Superior Hiking Trail Association with trail building and maintenance every spring.  The work was a great way to give back as a hiker.  The weekends also had a way of being memorable.

12/18/2009 - It is already December 18th and the holiday season is in full swing.  My Christmas festivities and gift giving start tomorrow.  Yet, I’m still looking for those last few gift ideas.  You know the stocking stuffer or the gift exchange gift (the type where anyone 6 to 60 could get your gift).

Thanks to a radio advertisement I heard the other day, I have my answer, Minnesota State Park Gift Cards.  I cannot think of a better gift than one that enables others to get out and enjoy our lake, lands, and way of life in Minnesota.
